Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. The Women’s Movement component is part of the work on supporting women’s participation in governance through mobilizing a cadre of capable and interested women to effectively influence and advance progress on gender equality, women’s empowerment engaging grassroot organizations, youth and other non-traditional. UN Women is part of the UN Agencies that are implementing the European Union-United Nations global, multi-year Spotlight initiative that focuses on eliminating all forms of violence against women and girls, harmful practices and promotion of sexual and reproductive health rights. The initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Government of Uganda, Non-Governmental Organizations, and Civil Society Organizations. Pillar 6 of the Spotlight Initiative which UN Women leads, aims to create a strong, vibrant, inclusive and active women’s movement in Uganda which engages on a wider range of issues and with non-traditional groups, reaches from national to local levels, and is held together by a shared set of core values, rather than a single issue or advocacy initiative. The vision is to see ‘an inclusive and strengthened women’s movement [constituted of women’s rights groups, autonomous social movements, advocates, civil society organisations, including those representing youth and groups facing multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination/marginalization, religious and cultural leaders, the private sector and other stakeholders] more effectively influence and advance progress on GEWE and VAWG, including SGBV/HP.

Duties and Responsibilities

Objectives of the Consultancy.

  1. To enhance a shared understanding of the concept of feminism and women’s movement building for partners and individual women activists

to enable them to take collective action for GEWE, women’s rights and fight against VAWG/including SGBV/HP through a training workshop.

  1. Enhance partners understanding of the spotlight pillar 6 component including the theory if change, indicators, and results framework.
  2. To lay a foundation for strengthening the women’s movement in Uganda that can collaboratively advocate and campaign for women’s rights,

including rights to vote, hold public Office, earn fair wages, equal pay and elimination of GBV as well as SRHR.

Scope of work.

Under the guidance of the EVAW and WPPL Team leaders of Kampala and the UN Women Monitoring Team, the Consultant will undertake the following tasks: 1. Carry out both pre and post capacity assessment to identify areas of focus for the training.

  1. Develop PowerPoint presentations to be used in the training for Women Movement Building as guided by UN Women.
  2. Attend a planning meeting and facilitators’ de-briefing meeting to share feedback on the organisation, content, discussions, and results of the

training.

  1. Facilitate the sessions using various participatory and adult learning methodologies.
  2. Submit to UN Women a quality report at the end of the training.

 

  1. Submit a training needs assessment report pointing out critical areas of support for partners to deliver on movement building.

Duration of the Consultancy and Deliverables: The consultation is scheduled for 15 days according to the chronogram below:-

Design training materials and develop PowerPoint presentations to be used in the training for Women Movement Building as guided by UN Women.

Required Skills and Experience

Education

A Master’s degree in social sciences, international relations, political science, international development studies, gender/ women’s studies, laws, or sociology.

Experience.

A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible work experience at the national or international level in design, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of development projects including international consultancies.

A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible work experience at the national or international level in design, planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of gender equality and women’s empowerment projects, women’s movement building, Violence Against Women and Girls,

Experience in the UN system and agencies, international and development assistance organizations is an asset.

Language

Fluency in written and spoken English is essential.

Working knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.

Knowledge of Uganda and the Great Lakes Region is an asset.
