(a) increase understanding of relevant issues at the international level by involving them directly in the work of the Office and the application of ILO principles, programmes and strategies;
(b) gain practical experience with the ILO directly related to their field of study.
The internship programme is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO. There should be no expectation of further employment at the end of the internship.

Introduction
The ILO in Africa is committed to “strengthening the efficiency of the institutions of work to ensure adequate protection of all workers through promoting fair and effective labour migration governance “as part of the Abidjan Declaration – Advancing Social Justice: Shaping the future of work in Africa. ILO’s Strategy on Labour Migration in Africa embraces the long-term vision of achieving a brighter future for African women and men migrant workers. Its implementation builds on ILO’s comparative advantage: being a standards-based institution specialised on employment/labour markets issues and grounded on social dialogue and gender responsive approaches. The areas of work of the ILO to promote fair and regular migration in Africa include: 1. Supporting the formulation and effective implementation of gender-sensitive and evidence-based labour migration policies while identifying their coherence with employment policies. 2. Enhancing the labour protection of migrant workers through the improvement of labour migration legislation and advocating for the ratification and effective implementation of ILO’s migrant workers Conventions (N° 97 and 143) as well as other related Conventions (N° 189, and 181) and UN-related standards. 3. Boosting Bilateral Labour Migration Agreements (BLMAs); 4. Extending social protection to migrant workers in Africa. 5. Enhancing skills and labour migration work and strengthening skills partnerships on migration. 6. Reinforcing fair recruitment of migrant workers’ work. 7. Strengthening and leveraging labour migration statistics. 8. Expanding work on climate change linkages to labour migration. 9. Promoting social dialogue and the role of social partners on labour migration management. The ILO promotes fair & effective LM governance; protection of the rights of migrant workers; through: ⦁ Improved knowledge base on labour migration in various key areas (skills development and recognition; fair recruitment, women migrant workers, COVID 19 impact on migrant workers, links between Climate change employment; extension of social protection to migrant workers, refugees and their families, …) ⦁ Capacity building and materials development for constituents, partners: in partnership with the ITCILO ⦁ Direct support/services to migrant workers ⦁ Technical assistance provided to AUC, RECs and MS as well as social partners through the implementation of development cooperation projects.
Learning areas
As an intern, you will be exposed to ILO’s conceptual approaches and practical interventions to support labour migration frameworks, institutions, and services for the protection of the rights of migrant workers in Africa and their wellbeing. You would be gaining experience in working with the labour migration team in Africa and HQ benefitting from a wide range of areas of expertise relevant to labour migration: social dialogue, International labour standards; protection of migrant workers through fair recruitment, and rights based bilateral labour agreements), skills recognition and development, employment creation and the integration of migrant workers, refugees and displaced persons in the labour markets, just transition and climate change and the nexus with labour migration , social protection, gender mainstreaming … You will also be exposed to concrete experiences in nurturing partnerships with key stakeholders at regional and national levels including ILOs constituents, generating and sharing knowledge on labour migration and the link to development and decent work, as well as on resource mobilization through formulation of project documents and negotiation with donors. Under overall guidance of the regional labour migration specialist, the intern will perform the following tasks: 1. Learn more about, capture and share relevant developments on promoting fair labour migration frameworks, institutions and services for migrant workers in Africa 2. Support programme development and implementation at the regional and country-level on labour migration with a focus on the two JLMP projects (ACTION and LEAD). 3. Contribute to research initiatives and generation of knowledge on any of the thematic priorities of the ILOs strategy on labour migration 4. Contribute to communications and promotion of ILO’s work on labour migration in Africa, 5. Enhance the mobilisation of resources and other support for the programme development and implementation 6. Undertake other duties as required
Inter alia, duties and responsibilities include: The overall objective of the internship is to work with and benefit (in terms of expertise and experiences sharing) from the team of labour migration specialists in Africa, in carrying the implementation of the Labour migration strategy for Africa, with a particular focus on the implementation of regional DC projects such as the JLMP Projects. 1. The catalytic actions for the AU/ILO/IOM/UNECA joint programme on labour migration governance for development and integration in Africa (JLMP- ACTION)- 2021-2024. 2. The Labour, employment, and mobility actions of the AU-ILO-IOM programme on labour migration governance for development and integration in Africa (JLMP LEAD Project) – 2022-2025.
Required profile
Education
Completed BA or equivalent degree Study areas: development economics, environment and sustainable development, labour studies, economics, social sciences, international development. The candidate should be enrolled in their final year of graduate degree programme or should have completed such a programme no longer than 1 years ago (mandatory)
Experience
⦁ Experience volunteering or working on issues related to international migration and /or mobility, development in the context of Africa, labour issues, or economics. ⦁ Experience in international environments ⦁ Experience of supporting organisation of meetings and events ⦁ ¨knowledge of Microsoft office and virtual meeting platforms (MS teams, Zoom) ⦁ Any relevant work experience and knowledge of IT.
Competencies
⦁ Adaptable to an international, multicultural and multilingual environment, ⦁ Good communication skills ⦁ Ability to plan, prioritize and deliver tasks on time ⦁ Show willingness to acquire new knowledge and skills ⦁ Ability to work in a team ⦁ Good interpersonal, networking and communication skills Additional requirements: Experience in quantitative research or policy and data analysis would be an asset.

Selection process:

Stipend: As an intern in the field, you will receive a monthly stipend from the ILO based on the cost of living in the area of the duty station, unless you receive funding through another institution (for example your university or a foundation). If you receive partial funding, ILO will cover the difference to ensure you receive the appropriate stipend per month. Your travel to the duty station will be at your own expense.
Insurance: Please note that the ILO does not take responsibility for any costs arising from accidents and/or illness incurred during the internship. You will be responsible for your own insurance coverage for illness and accidents for the duration of the internship at the duty station (whether Geneva or the field).
The intern will be provided the facilities needed to carry out his/her tasks, such as office space, and access to a PC, a printer, internet and a telephone.
