Mission and objectives

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

Context

The Urban Basic Services Section of UN-Habitat is mandated to improve the access to urban basic services, including sustainable solid waste management by collecting data on municipal solid waste management, improving policies and guidelines in partnership with local, regional and national authorities, creating an enabling environment for promoting investments in sustainable waste management with a focus on the urban poor and increasing coverage of sustainable waste management services in communities.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of Waste Management Expert, Basic Services Section, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

 

Monitors project review processes and schedules related to the unit’s outputs; where applicable, assists in the verification of receipt and accuracy of requisite documents, approvals, signatures, etc. to ensure compliance with relevant administrative requirements.

Maintains calendar/schedules; monitors change and communicates relevant information to appropriate staff inside and outside the immediate work unit.

Supports a wide range of administrative roles such as recruitment, procurement, con-tract administration, travel and consultant payments as per UN administrative and financial rules, regulations and guidelines.

Provides administrative support to Waste Management meetings / conferences. cyvbjvI CWdGVC

Responds or drafts responses to routine correspondence and other communications; uses standard word processing package to produce a wide variety of communication documents, memos and reports.

Support tracking project submissions to PRC.

Performs data entry and extraction functions on Microsoft excel.

Generates a variety of standard statistical reports, etc., using various databases.

Maintains files (both paper and electronic) and databases for work unit.

Tracks email communications.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Candidate must be a national or legal resident of the country of assignment.

Requirements

Required experience

3 years of experience in general office support or related area is required. Experience in note-taking and report compilation is required. Experience working on projects and project data management is desirable. Previous national / international experience(s) and of (an)other culture(s), (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded; and Previous experience at government, private sector or international organizations on administration , Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or environment would be considered an advantage.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighbouring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branches. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. More than 26% of Kenya’s people live below the international poverty line of $1 per day. Kenya’s main food crops are “maize, wheat, pulses, roots and tubers.” (FAO). Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta Inter-national Airport and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN HABITAT and UNEP. The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
