DATES OF INTERNSHIP: Jan – Jun 2022

HOURS PER WEEK: Full-Time (30 hours/week)

Note : Interns should not work over 40 hours/week

BACKGROUND : This internship opportunity provides professional experience in Mercy Corps’ Corporate Accounting department. Corporate Accounting is part of the larger Corporate Finance (CF) team including Accounting, Payroll, Travel, Treasury, and Financial Planning and Analysis.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION : The Corporate Finance intern will have the opportunity to gain experience supporting the accounting department of an international nonprofit with 40+ offices worldwide and revenue over $500 million.

The “Deep Dive into Accounting Processes” will provide the intern with hands-on experience developing a systematic approach to updating the department’s process documentation. The project will include taking an inventory of existing documentation, and then working directly with the subject matter experts to make updates, create process flows, and identify risks and control points. The final product will be an indexed collection of data that can easily be updated and maintained by the department. This is an excellent opportunity for learning how an accounting department works.

The intern will also assist with various accounting tasks relating to our established routines.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

The intern will participate in and gain first hand experience understanding what the Corporate Finance department of a large, complex non profit organization does on a daily, monthly, quarterly and annual basis. This intern will have the benefit of working with the internal accounting team and will gain an in-depth understanding of our work. This is a very useful perspective to have in advance of pursuing a career in finance and accounting.

Accounting Process Documentation

Work closely with accounting team to prepare documentation including:

Taking a process document inventory & evaluating existing documentation

Developing a stakeholder survey: ownership, review, format, access

Updating the library

IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD POSSESS THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS : This internship requires a detailed oriented and self-motivated individual who has the ability to work in a dynamic environment.

Major in Finance/Accounting and are within 1 year of completing or having completed their undergraduate degree

Completed all levels of Principles of Accounting and Intermediate Accounting

Candidate should be proficient using Office365

Candidate must have strong analytical and communications skill

Individuals with a strong interest in pursuing a finance/accounting career preferred, but not required

Overview the Corporate Finance (CF) Department responsibilities: The Corporate Finance Department works closely with International Finance to consolidate field office information from over 40 countries’ and over a dozen separate legal entities’ financial information. Corporate Finance generates Mercy Corps’ audited financial statements, tax filings, debt compliance reports and other miscellaneous external financial and tax reports. Under global treasury management, Corporate Finance provides management of cash and banking relationships, cash forecasting, debt and tax credit compliance.
