Haiti calls to respect right to education

Education authorities encouraged all people to continue mobilizing and recalled that education cannot wait.

They also pointed out that there must be no threats or attacks on educational centers and that society must accompany children as this is the only way to build a better future for the country.

The Ministry informed us that it is working on a new school calendar adapted to the current academic year, which will take into account the country’s challenges.

Nearly three months after the official start of the school year, many schools in Haiti have still not opened amid a convulsive political and economic climate, in addition to the recent crisis with fuel shortages.

At the end of August, the Haitian Ministry of Education agreed to the request of parents’ and teachers’ associations to postpone the start of the school year, scheduled for September 5, due to the seriousness of the economic crisis.

However, a month later, the country was rocked by mass anti-government protests demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry and then armed groups blocked fuel distribution.

Education is one of the main victims of Haiti’s recurrent crises, which have worsened in recent years with a succession of unpopular governments, economic recession, natural disasters, increased poverty and the growth of armed groups.
