     Duties and Responsibilities

    The intern shall support OHCHR Ethiopia Country Programme in fulfilling its mission: to work for the protection of all human rights for all people; to help empower people to realize their rights; and to assist those responsible for upholding such rights in ensuring that they are implemented. The Intern reports to the Deputy Country Representative of OHCHR-EARO and the Team Leader of the Capacity Building and Technical Cooperation Workstream under the overall coordination of the Regional Representative. Daily responsibilities of the intern may include but are not limited to:

    Monitor and analyze human rights developments and trends, especially related to accountability/transitional justice, civic space and the human rights of women and persons with disability in Ethiopia; research and draft internal and external notes and reports within the assigned area; support the organization of events (e.g., human rights trainings, workshops, celebrations to mark Human Rights Day); support the engagement of stakeholders with the UN human rights mechanisms; assist efforts to integrate human rights perspectives in national policies, plans and strategies; participate and take notes in meetings/conferences, as requested; and perform other duties as requested by the supervisor, as appropriate.

    Qualifications/special skills

    1. a) Be enrolled in, or have completed, a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or, b) Be enrolled in, or have completed, the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum bachelor’s level or equivalent c) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (i.e. Master’s degree or equivalent degree, or higher) or have completed an aforementioned academic degree in the area of law and human rights No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

    Languages

    English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in English and Amharic is required. Knowledge of another language spoken in Ethiopia is an asset.

    Intern Specific text

    Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions. Interns who are not citizens or permanent residents of the country where the internship is undertaken, may be required to obtain the appropriate visa and work/employment authorization. Successful candidates should discuss their specific visa requirements before accepting the internship offer.
