Description: CIPE East Africa Department seeks an intern to provide portfolio support to their Washington DC-based team in Spring 2024. The intern will support the preparation of research, content for publications, and presentations related to the strategic areas of business for peace, business leadership and entrepreneurship, and anti-corruption, governance, and integrity. The intern will primarily engage in research projects related to empowering the private sector to lead economic dialogue that strengthens peace and stability, economic development, and trade in Ethiopia, with the potential to engage in other CIPE Africa programs. Through this internship, the intern will have the opportunity to gain both technical and general professional skills.
Reports to: Program Associate, Africa
Learning Objectives:
Learn about CIPE’s African regional programs and activities.
Improved understanding of the functioning and role of an international development organization.
Strengthen research and communication skills, as demonstrated through blog posts, press releases, or briefings.
Learn, through direct participation, about coordinating with cross-functional teams and with external partners.
Develop professional competencies and productive work habits while working in a
diverse team across multiple countries.
Learn how to collaborate with a team and define priorities and responsibilities.
Direct exposure to project/program cycle management, including project implementation, and monitoring.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
Undertake research on the following key issues to guide future CIPE Africa programming:
Best practices around engaging the business community in conflict resolution.
Analysis of what has been done in Ethiopia and across Africa specifically.
How relevant stakeholders have engaged in conflict resolution.
Anti-Corruption initiatives in Ethiopia and an understanding of the main challenges facing the country.
Support implementation of communication efforts including blog entries, articles, and short briefs on topics directly related to the East Africa regional portfolio.
Draft reports related to the work and achievements of the Africa team and its partners.
Create social media content highlighting the East Africa regional programs.
Assist in the organization of program events that may take place during the internship.
Participate in team meetings and CIPE-wide events, when possible.
Virtually “Shadow” CIPE Africa staff by joining meetings and phone calls, as appropriate, to provide feedback on and track next steps and follow up.
Qualifications and Requirements:
Undergraduate junior or senior or graduate students in degree fields such as International Relations, International Business, Economic Development, Finance, Political Science, Public Policy, Law, or a related field are encouraged to apply.
Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills in a multicultural environment.
Ability to cultivate strong critical thinking and analytical skills with strong attention to detail.
Experience organizing events (virtual and in-person) is an advantage.
Strong computer skills, MS Office, WordPress, Excel, and willingness to integrate new software programs into their workflow.
Strong English writing and research skills.
Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills in a multicultural environment.
Knowledge of Amharic is not required but valued.
Plenty of curiosity and a willingness to learn!
All CIPE Spring 2024 internships will be remote, though interns may come into the CIPE office if they choose. This is a paid internship.
