Mike Ashley linked with Derby County purchase after Newcastle takeover

The former Magpies owner has not been put off by owning Newcastle United and reports claim he’s in the market for a new club

Mike Ashley is interested in purchasing Championship side Derby County, according to the latest reports.

The Mirror claims that sources close to Ashley have revealed an interest in buying the Rams, who are currently in administration.

A source close to Ashley has reportedly told the Mirror that owning Newcastle has not put the retail tycoon off owning a football club, and the former Magpies chief would be interested in buying the Rams after his £305million sale of the Magpies.

Wayne Rooney’s side are currently bottom of the Championship after a 12-point deduction for entering administration with further points losses likely.

It seems like relegation to League One is on the cards for the Midlands outfit, with further penalties expected.

Derby’s administrators have received interest from would-be buyers and are confident of reaching an agreement.

It’s unclear whether Ashley is one of those would-be buyers, but the former Magpies owner is mulling over whether he should invest in the club after ending his 14 year tenure on Tyneside.
