PROJECT BACKGROUND AND OVERVIEW
Catholic Relief Services, CRS, has been the official development and relief arm of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. Its mission has been to help people in need in over 120 countries since its founding in 1943. CRS has been implementing health and nutrition programming in many communities in these countries using various models. CRS currently has about sixty health and nutrition projects in forty-five countries that involve the community health system and support or utilize the services of CHWs directly or through partners. Many of the programs are implemented with partners and the host governments. Each project is unique in its funding, and beneficiaries are helped. The National Ministry of Health often oversees projects primarily providing health and nutrition assistance. Still, implementation in rural communities is done in collaboration with the community health system.
Due to the diversity of CRS’s programming, a survey is being implemented to map out the community health systems in our programming implementation portfolio and document lessons for the broader community. The overall goal of the survey is to clearly understand the community health systems environment CRS works in and how to support community health workers in these environments so that communities can achieve their best health status. To achieve this goal, this survey will assess the current health and nutrition programming CRS is implementing, determine which has a community health system and community health workers involvement, use tools to evaluate their current functionality, draw lessons to be learned, and make recommendations on the global and national levels.
The Health Systems Programming Intern will support this program survey’s design, implementation, analysis, and reporting. The intern is assigned to the Health and Social Services Unit of CRS’s Program Impact and Quality Assurance (PIQA) unit. The intern would be under the direct supervision of a technical advisor. This remote global internship connects with point people in different countries virtually, so there will be no need to travel. The intern’s key roles and responsibilities and expected deliverables are detailed below.
