Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe yesterday instructed authorities to appoint a three-member Interim Committee to manage Football Sri Lanka (FSL) through a gazette notification.
The term of the present set of FSL officials, of course, ended on August 31, 2022, but the Sports Minister decided to extend the official term for an additional period of 10 days.
Therefore, the administrative term of FSL was extended until September 10, 2022, following a request made by FSL President Umar Jaswar and its Executive Committee.
Thereafter, FSL also held their Special General Meeting last week, and got their new Constitution passed in the presence of FIFA and AFC officials with more than two-thirds of vote despite 13 members abstaining from voting.
After passing the new Constitution, an election was scheduled to be held on October 23, 2022, under the special permission of the Sports Minister.
However, the current FSL administration under the leadership of Umar came under severe criticism from the present and former football officials for the misuse of funds and fraud and the Sports Minister had no option but to appoint an Interim Committee. The new FSL interim Committee will be announced today.
