In Namibia, we support the Government of Namibia (GRN) through capacity development interventions at the national, regional, and local levels to define solutions to key development challenges with the primary goal of contributing to the achievement of the country’s development aspirations espoused in its Vision 2030, the National Development Plans, and Harambee Prosperity Plan II, and the 2030 Agenda along with its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In this context, the UNDP Namibia CO is seeking the service of an intern to support the Programme management Unit – Sustainable Inclusive Green Growth (SIGG) Portfolio its day-to-day functions, as well as support basic research through data collection and analysis.

Under the overall guidance and supervision of the Programme Coordinator, the intern ensures effective delivery of the CO programme by entering and managing data and supporting programme implementation consistent with UNDP rules and regulations, focusing on the various corporate tools.

The intern will also support various interventions within the Programme Unit – Sustainable Inclusive Green Growth specifically working in close collaboration with the Operations Team, Programme and Projects’ staff in the Country Office (CO), UNDP Regional Service Centre for Africa (RSCA) and HQs as required for resolving complex project management, finance related issues and exchange of information. In this capacity, the intern will be expected to also provide support to the work of the Economics Advisor on basic research through data collection and analysis on socio-economic issues and contribute to policy briefs, articles, talking points, and opinion pieces.

Duties and Responsibilities

Support the formulation of programme strategies and implementation of the Country Programme Document, Project Concepts, and Project Documents. Support as well basic research through data collection and analysis on socio-economic issues to inform policy briefs, policy briefs, articles, talking points, and opinion pieces.

Support to management of the CO programme (focusing on documentation, data entry, dashboard management and updates in the online systems).

Administrative support to the Programme Unit (organizes meetings, workshops, handles correspondences and incoming mails).

Support resource mobilization effort (directly working with the project manager(s), analysts &   specialist to create concepts, generate reports and update data).

Facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing (participate in learning and South- South exchanges as applicable)

Supports formulation of programme strategies and implementation of the Country Programme Document and Annual Work Plan implementation focusing on achievement of the following results:

Collection, analysis and presentation of background information for preparation of Project document(s), Annual Work Plans, policy briefs, articles, talking points, and opinion pieces on socio-economic issues. and other UNDP and donor specific needs, effective application of Results Based management tools and establishment of management targets Quantum and Quantum+

Presentation of background information for formulation of country programme, draft project concepts and documents, work plans, budgets, proposals on implementation arrangements, as well as analysis on the national budget.

Provides effective support to management of the CO programme focusing on the achievement of the following results:

Creation of projects in Atlas, preparation of required budget revisions, revision of project award and project status, determination of unutilized funds, operational and financial close of a project.

Provision of guidance to the executing agencies on routine implementation of projects.

Presentation of information for audit of projects, supports implementation of audit recommendations.

Regular review of the CO dashboards and providing support to maintain acceptable performance indicators

  1. Provides administrative support to the Programme Unit focusing on achievement of the following results:

Review of projects Financial Reports; preparation of non-PO vouchers for development projects.

Maintenance of the internal expenditure control system which ensures that vouchers processed are matched and completed, transactions are correctly recorded and posted in Atlas.

Timely corrective actions on unposted vouchers, including the vouchers with budget check errors, match exceptions, and unapproved vouchers.

Creation of requisitions for development projects, register of goods receipt .

Making budget check for requisitions, POs and vouchers.

  1. Supports resource mobilization focusing on achievement of the following results:

Support the analysis of information on donors, preparation of donor’s profile.

Support tracking and reporting on mobilized resources. Review of contributions agreement, managing contributions in Atlas/ Quantum.

  1. Ensures facilitation of knowledge building and knowledge sharing in the CO focusing on achievement of the following results

Organization of training for the operations/ projects staff on programme.

Synthesis of lessons learnt and best practices in programme management and implementation.

Sound contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

Student currently enrolled in a Master’s degree in Economics, Business, International relations, Development studies, Environmental Governance or related OR has attained qualification in the aforementioned fields no longer than 1 year from the application date

Language:

Fluency in oral and written English. Working knowledge of another local and or UN language is an asset.

In addition to the Education, prospective Intern Applicants must fulfill and meet the following first five criteria:

Recent MA or MSc graduates (not have graduated earlier than 1 year ago) or registered MA/ MSc students majoring in either environmental governance, economics, business or international development related field/s;

Excellent academic performance (attach a copy of your most recent/latest grading report with your application) or Thesis topic;

Outstanding performance on practical or applied assignment/s or most relevant Thesis topic;

Fluent in written and spoken English with excellent communication skills;

A reference and or supporting letter from one of your University Professors or holiday working experiences); in addition;Graduates with a keen interest or focus on development financing, economics,  climate change adaptation and resilience, renewable energy will get preferences; and

Advanced Graduates who are pursuing MA in the field of environmental economics, development financing or climate financing will get preferences.

Internship Conditions

UNDP will provide a stipend in the amount of N$3,496.28  monthly in accordance with the provisions of the UNDP Internship policy. All expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern or her/his sponsoring entity.

UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;

Interns are responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;

Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship;

Interns must provide proof of enrolment in health insurance plan;

Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;

Interns are expected to work full time, but flexibility is allowed for education programmes;

Interns need to obtain financing for subsistence and make own arrangements for internship, travel, visa, accommodation, etc.
