Volunteer Intern, Climate Security, Africa

The International Crisis Group’s Africa Program is looking for a voluntary intern to assist its Africa analysts and Future of Conflict staff in their research activities. This is a desk-based position. The voluntary internship is an excellent opportunity for someone to learn about climate data, conflict analysis and advocacy work, but also to gain valuable experience in a high-profile international NGO working to prevent war and shape peace worldwide. The voluntary internship would suit candidates with a recent undergraduate or graduate degree political science, economics, data science, or related fields. The voluntary intern will focus mainly on climate change and conflict in Africa.

Responsibilities: Monitoring relevant global developments, such as extreme weather events, via online sources;

Writing backgrounders on relevant literature and producing case studies to contribute to reports, briefings, and visual explainers on specific themes and conflicts;

Coding and classifying news articles, social media posts, and other material for content and sentiment, in preparation for quantitative analysis;

Supporting the production of data visualizations and statistical analyses;

Assisting in editing reports and briefings on conflict issues by staff;

Preparing advocacy and research materials and note-taking for relevant events and meetings;

Other administrative tasks, including arranging for meetings.

Qualifications: Good writing, research, and organizational skills;

A background in political science, economics, data science, public policy, sociology, or a related field;

Fluency in verbal and written English. Knowledge of Somali or French is an asset;

Proven interest in and knowledge of the Horn of Africa region, and/or the Sahel region;

Experience working with Excel (especially in collecting or working with social science data);

While not required, some experience with data visualization and statistical analysis in Stata, R, Python, or similar is a plus.
