Background

The SEMER component of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is looking for two upcoming young professionals (national) to serve in the capacity of UNDP Interns for a six-months period. The interns are expected to be fully committed and passionate about the wise utilization, protection and sustainable management of Namibia’s environment, considering the global, regional and national environmental challenges. Overall, they should aspire to contribute to Namibia’s long-term economic progression, social transformation, environmental sustainability and good governance.

UNDP is the UN’s global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience, and resources to help people build a better life. We are on the ground in 177 countries, working with them on their own solutions to global and national development challenges.

In Namibia, we support the Government of Namibia (GRN) to identifying key challenges in meeting its Vision 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by improving capacities at the national, regional and local levels.

To accelerate structural transformations for sustainable development our programming priorities, the UNDP Namibia Country Office has organized its programmatic activity into three portfolios: Sustainable, Inclusive and Green Growth (SIGG); Governance, Inclusive Institutions and Civic Engagement (GRICE) and Sustainable Environmental Management and Enhanced Resilience to Shocks and Crises (SEMER) Portfolio. The SEMER portfolio can broadly be divided into three overlapping areas of work: (a) Climate Change (mitigation including renewable energy solutions, adaptation and reporting to UNFCCC); (b) International Waters (marine and freshwater) and (c) Natural Resource Management (sustainable land-use; human-wildlife interaction; sustainable mining, waste management).

Under the Climate Change Mitigation output, the SEMER Portfolio is currently supporting the following projects: (1)Namibia’s First Biennial Transparency Report (BTR1) and Fifth National Communication (NC5) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC); (2) Enhancing Namibia’s capacity to establish a comprehensive Transparency Framework for Measurement, Reporting and Verification (MRV) of climate actions and reporting on NDC implementation under the Paris Agreement (CBIT), (3) Promotion of carbon markets in Namibia for an enhanced implementation of the nationally determined contributions (NDC) towards net-zero emissions and climate-resilient development, in response to the climate emergency and (4) Amplifying ambition under the Climate Promise – from pledge to action to support the implementation of Namibia’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDCS). In addition, the portfolio was worked on Enabling the provision of sustainable low-carbon energy services to public health facilities in Sub-Saharan Africa (Solar for Health Programme) which currently fall under the SIGG Portfolio;

In this context, the UNDP Namibia CO is seeking for Climate Change Mitigation Interns to support the SEMER Portfolio.

Under the overall guidance of the Programme Specialist, the interns ensure effective delivery of the CO programme by entering and managing data and supporting the portfolio implementation consistent with UNDP rules and regulations, focusing on the various corporate tools. In addition, the Intern will be interacting with and working in collaboration with entire UNDP Programme and Operation Teams, and other UN Agencies in Namibia

The interns will support various climate change mitigation-related projects within the Programme Unit. The interns work in close collaboration with the operations, programme and projects staff in the UNDP CO and UNDP Regional Service Centre for Africa (RSCA) and Headquarters (HQs) as required for resolving complex project management and exchange of information.
