The Environmental Justice Foundation (EJF) is an international non-profit organisation working globally to protect natural environments and the human rights of people who depend on them. EJF is dynamic, agile and effective, and the team works across 13 countries in Africa, Asia and Europe.
EJF is working to eradicate illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing and associated issues, such as human rights abuses. To do this, we work with governments and industry to promote transparency and traceability within seafood supply chains and markets. We conduct detailed investigations into illegal, unsustainable and unethical practices and actively promote improvements to policy-making, corporate governance and the management of fisheries along with raising awareness among consumers to incentivize market-driven solutions.
EJF’s global team also work on a range of other campaigns where environmental insecurity impact human rights. These include climate, forests, cotton and activist training. More information can be found at https://ejfoundation.org.
In Africa, EJF has projects in Ghana, Liberia and Senegal. EJF is looking to develop a presence in Cameroon and help to build campaigns and advocacy in the fishery sector. Cameroon’s waters – which are strategically located in the heart of the Gulf of Guinea – host a diversity of fish and several species of threatened large aquatic animals, and the country operates a significant fleet of fishing vessels which fish well beyond Cameroonian waters. The country also faces the issue of IUU fishing and overfishing as well as other threats such as pollution and climate change.
We are seeking a campaigner based in Yaoundé who is passionate about protecting the marine environment to progress our activities in Cameroon. The successful candidate will be an experienced, determined and motivated person who has an understanding of advocacy and fisheries governance or other relevant fields. They are expected to be able to work independently and with international colleagues to conduct research, develop strategies and represent EJF to relevant organisations. This will require regular work trips within Cameroon and occasional travels within the region and abroad may be considered.
Responsibilities include but not limited to:
Research, investigate and analyse the main issues related to destructive and IUU fishing, and associated illegal activities in Cameroon’s waters and supply chains, and by Cameroonian-flagged vessels wherever they operate;
Build EJF’s relationships with relevant figures in the Cameroonian government, including parliamentarians and officials, and liaise with internal and external partners, stakeholders and decision-makers to implement a detailed advocacy plan and project activities in Cameroon, including representing EJF in high-level meetings and events;
In this context, advocate the need to meet higher transparency and governance standards in Cameroon’s fisheries and fishing sector, and support the authorities and relevant stakeholders in that sense;
Actively participate in EJF’s efforts to strengthen fisheries community/participatory surveillance in Cameroon;
Provide recommendations as to future advocacy in the country. As such, support the development of strategic goals and advocacy plans, and work with EJF’s global team to develop further funding proposals as well as sources of support for existing and new projects;
Work in collaboration with partner groups to progress campaign objectives and project activities, and develop – as required – EJF materials relevant to the activities in Cameroon; and
Provide recommendations and complete administrative and legal procedures relating to setting up an office/legal entity in Cameroon.
Requirements
Relevant degree(s) and at least three years of demonstrable professional experience in environmental policy, oceans issues, human rights, government and/or other relevant fields;
Demonstrable professional experience in research, public affairs or communications – s/he will be comfortable addressing a wide range of audiences and engaging with coastal communities;
Attention to detail and ability to manage and prioritise tasks;
Professional level fluency in English and French;
Adept at using Microsoft Office software (Word, Excel, etc.);
Readiness to travel within Cameroon, including in remote areas and potentially at short notice; and
A driving license is a desirable asset.
To apply please send your English CV and a short covering letter in French explaining why you are the ideal candidate to recruitment@ejfoundation.org before 23 November 2022.
Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
Candidates must have the legal right to work in Cameroon.
