To achieve these goals, UN-Habitat has adopted the Strategic Plan (2020-2023) which repositions the agency as a major global entity and a center of excellence and innovation. In this respect, the organization is refocusing its niche position as the “thought leader” and the go-to programme for issues pertaining to its work, setting the global discourse and agenda on sustainable urban development.
The Land, Housing and Shelter Section (LHSS), within the Urban Practices Branch of UN-Habitat, hosts the secretariat of the Global Land Tool Network (GLTN), which is a network of over 80 international institutions that was established in 2006. GLTN has the mandate to develop, test and disseminate pro-poor and gender responsive approaches regarding rural and urban land, innovative residential tenures, affordable land management/administration systems, and land related regulatory/legal frameworks and tools. The Network hence focuses on research and tool development, and the provision of technical advice to Member States and backstop the regional offices and other sections of UN-Habitat. The intern will be under the direct supervision of the UN-Habitat, Nairobi, Land, Housing, and Shelter Section, Urban Practices Branch Global Solutions Division, Programme Management Officer.
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) Nairobi, Land, Housing, and Shelter Section, Urban Practices Branch Global Solutions Division Programme internship is for six (6) months.
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Programme Management Officer, the intern will:
Provide technical support in documenting lessons and experiences of the Unit’s land tenure interventions on country-level work, tools development, and partnership building.
Provide research and technical support to resource mobilization activities, including developing concept notes and proposals.
Provide technical and coordination support in developing land tools in collaboration with partners.
Assist substantive and technical staff in organizing and documenting land-related events, training and meetings.
Provide coordination support with partners concerning project monitoring, capacity development, and partnership-strengthening processes.
Support the overall research and documentation of GLTN-related work on land tenure and administration.
Contribute to the review of management and financial processes and workflows for efficiency and better coordination.
Contribute to various GLTN-related communication and advocacy activities and initiatives.
Perform other related tasks as assigned.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
- Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
- Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent
Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred areas of studies: Land Administration, Land Management, Political Science, Public Administration, Environment and Natural Resource Management, Urban and Rural Development, GIS and Planning or related field.
Work Experience
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Experience in project planning, monitoring and management is desirable.
Knowledge of urban development, land management, and information systems is required.
Experience in research and knowledge management is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of Arabic, French or Spanish is desirable.
