The United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. The internship position is located in the UNEP /NYO/SUN Office in Geneva, Switzerland.
The inventory internship is for a period of six (6) months. It is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35-40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Hybrid arrangements will be considered.
Interns are not financially remunerated by the United Nations. Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Sustainable UN Coordination Officer, the inventory intern will:
- Provide support to the compilation of the UN greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, waste and water management data from UN entities.
- Process data to assess emissions reduction trends in UN organizations overtime
- Attend events related to the Swiss led 2050Today initiative to show UN internal sustainability efforts
- Assist in estimating proxies for greenhouse gas emissions and waste in terms of consumption/generation per area or per capita;
- Provide assistance in the day-to-day work regarding the implementation of UN’s Sustainability Strategy Phase 1 (environmental sustainability in the area of management);
- Organize and participate of team meetings and take notes as requested;
- Help the Sustainable UN team maintain data and best practices from UN organizations with regards to internal environmental sustainability and ensure the information is well classified and easy to trace;
- Help the Sustainable UN team maintain its query tracking system for assistance to UN organizations in environmental sustainability.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
- Be enrolled in a graduate school program in computer or data science, environmental sciences, information technology, mathematics, analytics or related field (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); or
- Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program in computer or data science, environmental sciences, information technology, mathematics, analytics or related field (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
- Have graduated with a university degree in computer or data science, environmental sciences, information technology, mathematics, analytics or related field (as defined in (a) or (3) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
- Be computer literate in standard software applications.
- Have a demonstrated interest in and commitment to working on environmental issues.
- Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
- Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.
