Internship – Road Transport and Workshop Operations

The World Food Programme (WFP) is the leading humanitarian organization saving lives and changing lives, delivering food assistance in emergencies and working with communities to improve nutrition and build resilience. We are currently seeking to fill a intern position in the Global Fleet Unit of the Supply Chain Division based in Kampala, Uganda.
Brief description of Global Fleet
The Global Fleet Unit was established to centrally manage WFP’s truck fleet. The organization globally operates more than 900 trucks, which are deployed to fill critical gaps in local transport capacity, to stabilize transport rates in the event of increased insecurity and sudden growth in demand, and to pioneer new routes that, due to prevailing insecurity, would remain inaccessible to local transporters. The Global Fleet Unit operated three regional fleet hubs, based in Accra, Dubai and Kampala, to oversee and support fleet operations in the regions.

Duties and responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Regional Fleet Manager in Kampala, the candidate will carry out activities to support the expansion of Regional Hub services to third parties:
Support the fleet manager in upgrading the existing Global Fleet workshop in Kampala to provide maintenance services and repairs to other WFP units/divisions, as well as external partner’s (UN agencies)
Support the development of SOPs for the service provision of maintenance services and repairs to other WFP units/divisions
Support the implementation of a platform to digitalize the service provision process, from the request, to the billing of the service.
Use the fleet management system to generate/prepare periodic fleet and workshop based KPI reports
Provide support in monitoring performance and quality of the workshop, as well as customer satisfaction
Support in all aspects of the fleet and maintenance operations to enable effective management of operations.
Qualifications and experience
Currently enrolled with at least two years undergraduate studies completed, or recently graduated (within the past six months) in Business, Logistics, Engineering or related field c6qvrM5 CWdGUx
University course attendance in the past 12 months;
Excellent command of English; Working knowledge of a second UN language would be an asset;
Proficiency in MS Office (Word, Excel, Power Point, Outlook)

Ability to quickly assimilate UN/WFP specific processes and systems.
Ability to work in multicultural and diverse settings.
Proactiveness and excellent interpersonal skills and team spirit.

Working Languages
Working knowledge of English (proficiency/level C) is required.
Supervision (Level/Methods of Supervision)
Under the direct supervision of the Regional Fleet Manager the incumbent will be provided with close mentoring, guidance and technical supervision. Performance planning and reviews as well as learning and development discussions will be elemental part of the supervision. The Global Fleet Manager will be the second-level supervisor. With the support of a comprehensive induction package and assignment of a buddy/mentor, the intern will rapidly become a productive member of the team.

Throughout their assignment WFP interns have access to an industry leading learning platform, weLearn. Depending on opportunities and availability of funds, he/she may participate in WFP workshops or seminars, as appropriate.

Understand WFP’s mandate and have a sound knowledge of the work performed worldwide
Have developed/improved skills in fleet and workshop management, data management, reporting, humanitarian field support and working in a multicultural environment

Terms and Conditions:
Interns receive a monthly stipend from WFP up to the maximum amount of US$1000 per month depending on the duty station of assignment.
WFP is not responsible for living expenses, arrangements for accommodation, necessary visas and related costs.
WFP will reimburse travel ticket for candidates who are nationals of developing countries and are pursuing their studies in their home country.
WFP will recognize candidates’ educational credentials from recognised institutions that have been certified by competent international or national authorities such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) or Ministries of Education.
Candidates who bear any of the following relations to WFP staff members are not eligible to apply: sons, daughters, brothers or sisters.
