Organisational Setting and Reporting
UN Environment is the leading global environmental authority that sets the global environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UN Environment Ecosystems Division works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and capacity development for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition.
Responsibilities
Under the direct supervision of the Chief of the Adaptation Unit, the intern will carry out the following: Climate finance adaptation scoping assessment: The focus of the scoping assessment to identify public and private sector finance for adaptation. Research is required in several areas to support the assessment. These include (for each identified adaptation priority):
Existing programmes (government, donor and private sector based) to support the adaptation investments;
Sources of public and private sector financing for the programmes
Main institutional and policy frameworks that support implementation of the adaptation priority
Barriers to finance including institutional and policy barriers
Identification of suitable funds and facilities for adaptation finance to support UNEP programming.
Further development of GCF project categogue: an initial catalogue of adaptation and cross cutting projects approved by GCF was developed in 2018. This should be further extended to include projects approved since 2018 to date (an additional 100). An analytical report on GCF programming trends over time should be developed.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.
NOTE: “Fluency equals a rating of “fluent” in all four areas (read, write, speak, understand) and “Knowledge of” equals a rating of “confident” in two of the four areas.
