A workshop held in Kazakhstan to develop a national initiative for Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) by 2030

Astana, 31 October 2023 – The Ministry of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan and UNESCO Almaty organised a workshop to develop a national initiative to mainstream Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) into the country’s sustainable development efforts.

The national workshop was held within the framework of the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) 2030 programme, which is part of UNESCO’s global initiative.

Specialists from the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Science and Higher Education, Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, Ministry of Culture and Information, university and school teachers, NGO representatives discussed the results of the review study on ESD activities conducted by the National Consultant Saule Kalikova with the support of the UNESCO Regional Office in Almaty and the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

During the workshop, various stakeholders also contributed to the discussion of activities and initiatives in the 5 priority areas of the ESD Roadmap 2030 (education policy, learning environment, teachers’ capacities, youth mobilisation, strengthening the role of the local community) that will be included in the national ESD initiative of Kazakhstan. The National Initiative will be presented at the Global ESD-Net Conference organised by UNESCO in December this year in Tokyo, Japan.

The national workshop represents an important step in the efforts to introduce ESD and achieve sustainable development in the Republic of Kazakhstan.
