Organizational Setting

The FAO Representation in Uganda provides technical assistance to the Government of Uganda in the agriculture, forestry, fisheries and related sectors. The Agroforestry Specialist will support the planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of agro-forestry related interventions under the following projects: GCP/UGA/043/LDF project entitled “Integrating climate resilience into agricultural and pastoral production in Uganda, through a Farmer/Agro-pastoralist Field School Approach; GCP/UGA/054/EC project entitled “Global Climate Change Alliance plus (GCCA+)”; and GCP/UGA/055/SWE project entitled “Climate Resilient Women Economic Empowerment (CRWEE)”, funded by the Global Environment Facility, European Union and Government of Sweden, respectively. These projects aim to strengthen key government institutions at central and decentralized levels and build the resilience of communities in the face of a changing climate.

Reporting Lines

Under the overall guidance of the FAO Representative in Uganda and in close collaboration with the Deputy FAO Representative, National Project Coordinators and other Technical Specialists, the Agroforestry Specialist will be under the direct supervision of the Team Leader, Climate Change Program and the Energy Specialist (2nd line Supervisor).

Tasks and responsibilities: The Agroforestry Specialist will:

In collaboration with FAO National Project Managers and Coordinators of GCP/UGA/043/LDF, GCP/UGA/054/EC and GCP/UGA/055/SWE lead efforts with the national and district stakeholders to plan, implement, monitor and evaluate agro-forestry-related interventions;

Provide advice on what agroforestry practices are the most resilient to climate change depending on the local context in the target project districts.

Provide advice on quality tree planting material for farmers

Train and advice project beneficiaries (farmers, communities) on tree planting, bio-energy plantation establishment and maintenance operations

Support overall planning to ensure implantation of activities related to bio-energy plantations and agroforestry (selection of beneficiaries, procurement of inputs) are timely initiated and effectively delivered to project beneficiaries within the project cycle

Provide support in the development of the Agro-Pastoral (AP) /Farmer Field School (FFS) trainings to ensure that proper agro-forestry practices are included in AP/FFS trainings.

Work with the District Natural Resources and Environment Officers to identify sites where the project can undertake agroforestry activities

Assess the capacity of farmers and/or farmer associations in target areas to participate in the project, and propose capacity building measures for these stakeholders in agroforestry

Propose agroforestry activities to improve sustainable land management practices in agricultural areas, in order to reduce downstream impacts while also improving incomes and food security

Propose project activities to improve market access / develop business plans for agroforestry, wood and non-wood agro-forestry products

Provide technical assistance to the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Production and Fisheries (MAAIF), and target District Local governments with respect to planning and development of agro-forestry systems.

Carry out monitoring visits to implementing partners and project beneficiaries during project implementation.

Prepare project reports and other ad-hoc reports on project activities as and when required;

Perform any other duty

CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING

Minimum Requirements

University Degree in Agroforestry, Forestry or related area

At least three years of relevant experience in Agro-forestry, Bio-energy plantations, Forestry plantations, Climate Smart Agriculture or related fields.
