The purpose and dimenSion of the role

Plan International Cameroon is presently responding to the humanitarian crisis in the Far-North region of Cameroon through numerous programs and projects aimed at improving the lives of refugees, IDPs and host populations affected by the armed conflicts in the Lake Chad sub-region. There is a high need for Communication with Donors, Resource Mobilization, Social Mobilization, Media Relations, Influencing and Advocacy, Communication with Communities (CwC), and Communication for Community Engagement.

As such, the role of the Communication and Advocacy Assistant is critical to implement the Communication Plan for the project ” Improvement of Education for Nigerian Refugee Girls in Far-North”, and to support the operationalization of the Communication Plan for Plan International’s Program Influencing and Implementation Area Office in the Far-North region of Cameroon. The role is also essential for the capturing and documentation of the project’s successes and challenges via fact sheets, case studies, stories, testimonies, quality pictures and videos, media products, articles, etc. The role will also support the implementation of Advocacy and Behaviour Change actions to promote the children’s rights, especially their rights to education, in the projects areas.

Accountabilities

Communications and Media Relations

Support the development and quality implementation of PIIA’s Communication, with a focus on the project’s Plan.

Carry out regular field trips to cover project activities, interview stakeholders, and produce compelling stories, testimonies, articles, etc., to be published.

Take quality pictures and short videos to accompany write-ups and to be saved in the media bank.

Identify frontline media outlets and suggest initiatives to promote the activities and impact of Plan International’s work in the Far-North region.

Support the development of Media Kits and invitations to media for the coverage of project activities.

Track the project’s exposure and report concerns.

Support effective internal communications

Prepare presentations and reports where need be.

Support the quality realization of all other communication activities of the PIIA.

Visibility and Branding

Identify the visibility and branding needs of the project, propose corresponding actions, and support the implementation of the actions.

Ensure the correct use of Plan International’s identity and that of the donors.

Ensure the quality production of Information, Education and Communication (IEC) materials.

Ensure the quality branding of project activities (meetings) and Non-Food Items (NFIs).

Advocacy and Behavior Change Communications (Influencing)

Support the development and implementation of effective advocacy and behavior change actions to promote the rights of children and youths, especially girls.

Support the mobilization and empowerment of youths as champions of change for girl’s rights promotion.

Work with the Communication Officer and program staff to develop engaging messages and IEC materials to support advocacy and behavior change campaigns.

Support the Communication Officer to identify and engage working relationships with local media (community radios, TV, etc.) to support the mobilization of stakeholders.

Identify and create talking points/Q&As for potentially sensitive issues affecting girls’ education.

Carry out any other action as assigned.

At least 1 year of experience working in the domain of communication and media.

Multiple language skills desirable

Technical Competencies required for this position

 

University Degree in Journalism, Communication or equivalent experience

At least 1 year of experience working in journalism, communications, media, or Public Relations

Good understanding of the print, radio, television and online media

Posses skills in photography

Fluent written and spoken English and/or French. Knowledge on an additional working language is an advantage.

Working experience with or in collaboration with an NGO, UN agency, or equivalent, is preferred.

Ability to work under little supervision and as a team player.

Ability to operate effectively in stressful situations, including working overtime.

Good time management and problem-solving skills.
