Organisational Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) is the UN headquarters in Africa and the representative office of the Secretary-General. UNON supports program implementation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), and the Resident Coordination System (RCS) globally, as well as other UN offices in Kenya, by providing administrative, security, conference and information services (www.unon.org).

The post is located in the Information and Communication Technology Unit (ITU) within the Division of Conference Services (DCS). The Unit is responsible for providing technical support and services to DCS clients, including operating and maintaining the conference management and simultaneous interpretation (CMSI) system, Web streaming, AV recording, running in-person/hybrid and virtual meetings, including integration of remote concurrent interpretation platforms. The intern will be under the direct supervision of the UNON, Nairobi, Information Technology Unit, Division of Conference Services, Senior Technical Assistant.

The United Nations Office of Nairobi (UNON), Nairobi internship is for six (6) months.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.

Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the interns’ assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the direct supervision of the Senior Technical Assistant, the interns will:

Assist in updating and managing DCS communications (Safaricom and Telkom bills) and updating phone numbers and locations.

Assist in undertaking, updating, and reporting on inventory.

Prepare daily / monthly/weekly reports for all meetings in and outside Nairobi.

Provide technical support for DCS staff and delegates and setup up computers for conference and training.

Assist duty technicians in setting up, operating, and maintaining conference equipment.

Assist in setting up and operating Web-streaming infrastructure.

Assist in administrative duties in the Office of the Chief, ITU/PCS/DCS.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

  1. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  2. Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent

Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office).

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred areas of study: Technology, Audio Visual Engineering, Information Technology, or any other related area.

Work Experience

No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.

Proficiency in the use of MS Office applications or equivalent is desirable.

Knowledge in operating AV equipment is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another official UN language is an asset.
