Org. Setting and Reporting

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all.

The position is in the Programme Development Branch of the Global Solutions Division of UN-Habitat.

The Global Solutions Division (GSD) is responsible for providing programmatic direction for UN-Habitat and is responsible and accountable for the programmatic delivery of the Strategic Plan. The Division leads the tools and methodology production and the integration of the various substantive competencies towards effective delivery of the Strategic Plan and the mandate of UN-Habitat. It provides substantive training to staff members and supports capacity development of Member States and partners.

The Programme Development Branch (PDB) is responsible for the overall coordination of programme development. It brings together normative and operational expertise supporting high-quality integrated programmes that maximize results across the outcomes and the domains of change in the Strategic Plan. It builds on concrete demands of national and local governments, strengthening the capacity of government and urban stakeholders at all levels to address the social, economic, environmental and crisis dimensions of sustainable urbanization. The Branch also focuses on supporting global programme development to strengthen normative capacity and knowledge generation to increase impact and influence, through strategic partnerships.

The PDB Internship Programme aims to combine practical work experience on project management alongside career development mentorship. This is a collective call for interns to be assigned within different teams across the Branch, which are aligned with the sub-programmes of the Strategic Plan, according to their background and areas of interest. PDB interns will develop work and report to their direct supervisor/mentor.

 

The Programme Development Branch, Global Solutions Division internship is for a minimum of two months (2) and maybe extended up to a maximum of six (6) months. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (37.5 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the team to which they are assigned.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern

Responsibilities

The intern should be able to provide thorough, well-reasoned written support, including background studies, first draft project proposal, speaking notes, e-mail and oral communications, and meeting and research materials. Provide strong reviews and feedback for project proposals, based on pre-determined criteria and clear guidance. Develops and maintains effective working relationships. Be able to assist in data collection and analysis. Efficiently uses resources and identifies opportunities.

Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background; the intern’s assigned office as well as the internship period.

Under the Supervision of the Chief, Programme Development Branch, the intern will:

– Support the activities related to the preparation and implementation of Strategic Plan and work programme, projects, tools and outreach activities of UN-Habitat, and ad hoc operational support to the related functions of the Programme Development Branch.

– Drafting knowledge products and working documents, reports and correspondence or concept notes.

– Desk studies (of documents, reports and the internet search) related to the themes of the Strategic Plan 2020-2023 and specifically for planning for future projects.

– Support to arranging for and participation in internal and external meetings. This will involve both organizational and substantive tasks, such as preparation of contributions, development of agendas, logistical

support, reporting and follow-up actions.

– Support in communications and coordination with the UN Regional Commissions, UN Country Offices and other UN entities.

Monitors ongoing developments inside and outside the clients’ environment to keep informed and anticipate problems. Keeps clients informed of progress or setbacks in projects. Meets timeline for delivery of products or services to client.

Education

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  2. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  3. Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent

Thematic areas (PDB Teams):

1)Urban planning and design, development studies, social/political science, or economic development:

– Spatial planning;

– Urban economics, digital systems, blended finance;

– Climate change, urban environment;

– Migration and legal affairs;

– Urban resilience;

2)Capacity development and training;

3)Communications and digital content creation;

4)Data science and visualization.

Be computer literate in standard software applications.

Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;

Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred area of Studies:

Urban planning; data scientist, creation of virtual training programmes through video, graphics, and similar

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship position, fluency in English is required.
