Organisational Setting and Reporting
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme, UN-Habitat, is the agency for human settlements. It is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable towns and cities with the goal of providing adequate shelter for all (www.unhabitat.org). The Urban Practices Branch (UPB) is the thematic department at UN-Habitat with a mandate to support national and local government in urban planning, design, and management-related areas of work, such as national urban policies, metropolitan planning, strategic and detailed planning, urban-rural linkages, urban regeneration, public space, urban planning and innovation, and urban planning and climate change.
Planning and The Planning, Finance, and Economy Section (PFES) is responsible for coordinating the Agency’s substantive, normative and operational work on various dimensions of planning, finance, and economy. The Section aims to develop, document, pilot/test and disseminate planning policies, norms, standards, tools, methodologies, regulatory frameworks, operating procedures and practices at global, regional, national and sub-national levels in support of (a) urban and territorial planning at all scales including urban design and public space design; (b) urban finance (municipal finance and urban development/projects finance); and (c) local economic development.
The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat), Global Solution Division, Nairobi, the internship is for six (6) months.
In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel, and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern.
The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual’s background, the interns’ assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the direct supervision of the Program Management Officer, the Global Solution Division intern will: Operations:
Assist with the coordination of programme activities, as well as monitoring and reporting of related projects.
Support programme’s database monitoring and management.
Support event/meeting planning and preparation, including assistance in substantive tasks, such as preparation of contributions, development of agendas, logistical support, reporting and follow-up actions.
Knowledge management:
Drafting knowledge products and working documents, reports and correspondence or concept notes.
Perform analytical research of technical material, related to the themes of the Strategic Plan 2020-2025.and support production of normative publications, strategic programme/project planning, and reporting of programme’s performance.
Assisting with the creation of data visualization components related to programme’s monitoring and performance.
Communication:
Support in communications and coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
Assist in communications and social media presence.
Support drafting of material and or stories for external and internal audiences.

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
- Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
- Have graduated with Bachelor’s degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent
Be computer literate in standard software applications (Microsoft Office) e.g., Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, Teams, SharePoint, etc) and Adobe Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, etc.)
Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter.
Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes a willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Preferred areas of study: Architecture, Urban Development, Urban Planning and Design, Urban Policy and Governance, Environmental Management, Environmental Science, Climate Studies, Business management, public administration, and sustainable development: Public Administration, Project Management, Communication, Public Relations, Human Resource Management, Data Analytics, and Management, or related field.
Work Experience
No working experience is required to apply for the United Nations Internship Programme. Your training, education, advance course work or skills should benefit the United Nations during your internship.
Experience working in urban design and planning projects, development or management is required.
Experience drafting knowledge products and working documents, reports, and correspondence or concept notes is desirable.
Experience in the creation of data visualization components related to programme’s monitoring and performance is desirable.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in Oral and written English is required. Knowledge of French or Spanish is desirable.
