POSITION TITLE:           Laboratory Animal Caretaker/Sanitary Officer EIDP

REPORTS TO:                Senior Laboratory Technologist.

LOCATION:                      Makerere -COVAB

POSITION SUMMARY:

The incumbent will serve as the Laboratory Animal Caretaker/Sanitary Officer EIDP for MUWRP’s Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (EIDL), currently housed at the Makerere University College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Biosecurity (COVAB), and the Uganda Virus Research Institute (Entebbe). The incumbent’s primary responsibility will to ensure that all research animals are well taken care of, and that the laboratory environment is kept clean and safe. The incumbent is expected to perform their duties in accordance with the requirements of the study protocols, GCLP, GCP, Lab Safety and QA/QC requirements.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Technical Duties

  • Feed and water animals/birds according to schedules and feeding instructions.
  • Clean, organize, and disinfect the laboratory, animal house and equipment used.
  • Examine and observe animals to detect signs of illness, disease, or injury.
  • Administer medication to the animals/birds as required.
  • Follow established procedures and techniques during interaction with the animals/birds to minimize hazards such as infections or contamination.
  • Maintain records of animals/birds including feeding, medication, animal inventory, animal transfers, animal receipt and identification.
  • Conduct phlebotomy for animal samples whenever called upon
  • Participate in animals sample collection activities
  • Prepare lists of supplies to be sent to sites
  • Lifting of supplies to and from the laboratory or animal house.
  • Routinely handle, relocate, and transport animals/birds within the facilities to and from farms and markets or other destinations.

 

  • Cleaning project vehicles.
  • Laundry services of uniforms or laboratory gear.

Administrative duties

  • Maintain confidentiality of activities taking place at the laboratories
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by the senior lab tech, lab manager and Program Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

The incumbent must have the following minimum qualifications:

  • A certificate in Animal Health Sciences or related certificate or related qualification.
  • A diploma in Animal Health Sciences or related certificate or related qualification is an added advantage

OTHER SKILLS:

  • At least two years’ experience working as an animal caretaker or lab cleaner
  • Good interpersonal, organizational and communication skills are essential, as is excellent knowledge of written and spoken English.
  • Interested in well-being of animals/birds.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision

PHYSICAL ABILITY: 

–    Ability to lift laboratory supplies to and from the lab to the required destination

–    Willingness and ability to work late hours and over weekends
