Tottenham pulled off a shocking 4-0 result over the current title holders in their back yard that will send reverberations across the league for days to come.
Guardiola, who is fresh from signing a two-year extension, will have to dig deeper to try and get his side rolling once more.
We hope you enjoyed today’s classic. On behalf of Kevin Hand, this is Rohan Sharma signing off.
‘In eight years, we have never lived this kind of situation’
Man City boss Pep Guardiola spoke with BBC Radio after the match. “In this moment, we are fragile defensively. We started really well as normal but we could not score and then, after that, we conceded. After that, we conceded some more, which is difficult for our emotions right now.
“In eight years, we have never lived this kind of situation. Now we have to live it and break it [the winless run] by winning the next games, especially the next one. Now, we see things in one way, maybe in a few weeks, we see it differently.
“We are happy when we win and concerned when we don’t. It’s normal. There would be a problem if they were not worried or I am not worried. We are not used to this situation but life is like that. Sometimes it happens and we have to accept it.
“I would say that it is not a question of tactics when you lose these types of games. There are details, of course, but this situation is how you react in some moments. Things are different when you lose three league games in a row.
“The fire is when you win a lot of games, which is better than when you are losing, but we accept this. We have to move forward.”

‘When you play City, they test every aspect of your game’
Spurs manager Postecoglou spoke with Sky Sports after the match: “[On the scoreline], it’s significant when you understand the context of who we were playing.
“I’m proud of the lads, the football we played, the resilience and discipline we showed. When you play City, they test every aspect of your game and we handled that well.
“It was an important game for us. The way the boys reacted [to defeat to Ipswich]. It’s easy when you’re under pressure to splinter off but I never got the sense that would happen this week.
“The disappointing thing over the last few games is, we’ve fallen well short of the kind of team we want to be. But I’ve no doubt we are on the right track.”
“[On James Maddison] He was outstanding. You have to be against City, and Madders was great. He’s gone through a lean spell but I never doubted his ability. I thought the kind of game we were expecting would suit him.
“I thought we’d need his ability to keep the ball in tight midfield areas. I take it personally on myself if players aren’t reaching their level. That’s on me to get him back up there.”
‘It is a day to remember’
After scoring two goals on his birthday, Maddison is rightly adjudged player of the match.
“To come to the champion’s [ground], and especially City, with how much they have dominated in the last few years, and come away with a four-nil [result] is special. It is a day to remember,” he said.
“Sometimes, as a player, you are always looking to the next game, but these days are rare, so going to enjoy this one. It is nice when you make the sacrifice to miss a birthday, it makes it all worth it.
“I made a few runs this season and didn’t score, but glad it came off today. I can take it on myself to realise what the team needs. I just wanted to help in the buildup. It is about staying high when needed to, or drop down where required [in the field]. Really happy to bounce back today and show my leadership.”
Guardiola suffers joint-heaviest defeat of career
This is the joint-biggest defeat for Pep Guardiola as a manager. He lost by the same scoreline against Everton in 2017 and Barcelona in the 2016 Champions League.
During his Bayern Munich days, he lost to Real Madrid in the 2014 Champions League.
A look at the standings
City’s winless run continues as they hold on to second spot with 23 points after 12 games. Liverpool now have a glorious opportunity to increase their gap to eight points if they can beat Southampton tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Spurs hold on to sixth spot with 19 points, with a healthy goal difference of 14.
City will next face Liverpool at Anfield, which could be their toughest test yet, on December 1. Tottenham will play Fulham at home on the same day.
Spurs rattle off famous Etihad win

Spurs complete the unthinkable as they beat the Premier League champions 4-0 at the Etihad! This is City’s fifth-straight defeat, which is the first under Guardiola’s lengthy tenure.
Postecoglou’s side delivers yet another crucial blow to City’s hopes of winning four Premier League titles on the trot.
Despite the home side dominating the match stats, it was the five shots on target out of 23 total shots that would be the real story. City were simply wasteful in front of goal, and it has come to bite them in a huge way today.

Vicario keeps Haaland out
It is Haaland’s turn to try and beat the Italian keeper, but he too is denied at the near post from the right side. De Bruyne and Sarr go for the ball, with Sarr doing well to keep the Belgian away.
De Bruyne stamps at Sarr soon after, forcing both sets of players to converge on the scene. It leads to De Bruyne and Sarr being cautioned for their involvement in the fracas.
81 mins: Manchester City 0-3 Tottenham Hotspur
Gundogan denied from near range
After getting on the inside-right channel, Gundogan powers a shot at Vicario at the near post. The Spurs number one keeps it out for a right-side corner, which is floated in by De Bruyne.
After some back and forth, the sequence ends with Akanji calling for a foul. Soon after, Bernardo is cautioned for a rough sliding tackle from behind on Maddison.

He replaces the outgoing Savinho. Jack Grealish also comes on for Lewis.
74 mins: Manchester City 0-3 Tottenham Hotspur

Kulusevski blocked
Spurs engineer another spirited counterattack. The ball is played to Kulusevski on the right side. He weaves his way into the box before firing at close range, trying to beat Ederson on his right.

The rain has got heavier, which perfectly reflects the mood of the Cityzens at the moment.
55 mins: Manchester City 0-3 Tottenham Hotspur
GOAL! Porro scores. Manchester City 0-3 Tottenham Hotspur
It goes from bad to worse for the home side as Porro makes it a three-goal cushion at the Etihad!
Kulusevski is arguably one of the players of the match as he forges another run down the middle after evading a couple of defenders.
He passes to Son on his left, who then whips a deep ball towards Solanke on the right side. Solanke then lays it off to Porro behind, who drives it hard into the top-left corner to send Spurs fans the world over into ecstasy.
53 mins: Manchester City 0-3 Tottenham Hotspur
City search for breakthrough
They have been more guarded with the ball in the early minutes of this second half.
Spurs have barely been able to fashion any attacks, but do get on a break thanks to Kulusevski on the right side.

Second half under way
We are back for the second half of what has been a most intriguing affair at the Etihad.

Half-time: Manchester City 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur
City looked like their usual dominant self in the opening 10 minutes, with Spurs barely hanging on.
But then it became the Maddison show as he knocked in two goals within eight minutes to completely change the direction of this match.
City were then largely outmatched, and despite the odd chance, didn’t really test Vicario to the full extent. Guardiola will have some choice words for his men as the players head towards the tunnel.
Half-time: Manchester City 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur
Three minutes added
With not too many stoppages in play, we will have just three additional minutes to play out.

Vicario makes key intervention
After receiving a pass back from the central part of the field, Porro tries for a header towards Vicario so Spurs can reset.
However, he doesn’t get enough on it as Savinho races towards the ball. Vicario rushes out to intercept the ball before Savinho could latch onto it.
As a result, both players go down temporarily after making contact but are able to continue soon after.
39 mins: Manchester City 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur

Vicario denies Savinho
Gvardiol chips towards Savinho inside the box, on the left side.

22 mins: Manchester City 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur
GOAL! Maddison scores again. Manchester City 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur
It is a birthday brace for Maddison! Gvardiol gives the ball away on the right flank.
Maddison collects it, passing it to Son on his left. He then executes the one-two pass perfectly with a lovely ball at the end of Maddison’s run.
Maddison pokes it past a converging Ederson to give Spurs a comfortable cushion.
20 mins: Manchester City 0-2 Tottenham Hotspur
Son curler saved
Son weaves his way in from the left side. He makes just enough room to try to curl a shot from outside the box towards the far post.
It looked like an accurate strike as Ederson was forced into a full-stretched dive to tip it behind for a right-sided corner. The resulting corner is taken, but City are able to neutralise the threat soon after.
19 mins: Manchester City 0-1 Tottenham Hotspur
Foden goes over the top
After getting through on a break towards goal, Foden tries to chip Vicario but ends up getting too much elevation on it.
City have had three solid chances now, but have been lacking in their finishing.

Fifty up for Ange
Only Antonio Conte and Andre Villas-Boas (29 and 27, respectively) won more games in their first 50 games in charge of Spurs than Postecoglou.
The Australian has won 25, drawn seven and lost 17 of his first 49 Premier League matches.
This season’s slow start means only Ossie Ardiles (23) and Glenn Hoddle (20) had more defeats in that time.
POLL RESULT: Manchester City or Tottenham?
Here’s how you voted in our poll ahead of our featured game of the day:

Rodri presented 2024 Ballon d’Or
Just before the official kickoff, Manchester City have rolled out the red carpet for one of their own.
After becoming the first Premier League player since Cristiano Ronaldo in 2008 to win the illustrious Ballon d’Or, Rodri steps out onto the pitch to a hero’s welcome.
Freed From Desire plays on in the background as his name is illuminated across the pitch. The display gets to Rodri as tears of joy stream from his eyes.
Fun fact – if you don’t shoot, you don’t score
The City midfielder has had 17 shots on goal this season, which is the highest total by any player yet to score.
Will that change for the Spaniard in our featured game?

A Spurs birthday celebration
James Maddison is celebrating his 28th birthday. Can he deliver a present to the Spurs’ fans and help his side to victory at Etihad Stadium?
Ange Postecoglou’s take on Pep Guardiola
“He’s fantastic for the Premier League,” the Tottenham manager said of his opposite number on Saturday. “He keeps setting the standard, which is great for all of us trying to mow him down,” the Greek Australian told reporters.
“It’s not easy to win in different countries, and I know that he’s been at big clubs, but as we’ve seen recently, that’s not necessarily transferable to winning things all the time. You’ve still got to do it.
“So he’s maintained a ridiculous level of excellence. The way his team plays, they’re always sort of challenging every opponent they face, and I guess his energy to maintain that for so long – it’s been outstanding.
“He’ll go down as one of the greats already, and the indication that he’s re-signed means there’s more to come.”
Premier League results so far
Here’s how the rest of the day has shaped up ahead of the game at the Etihad:
- Leicester City 1-2 Chelsea
- AFC Bournemouth 1-2 Brighton & Hove Albion
- Arsenal 3-0 Nottingham Forest
- Aston Villa 2-2 Crystal Palace
- Everton 0-0 Brentford
- Fulham 1-4 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Pep pragmatic on City’s losing streak
Guardiola lost four matches in a row for the first time in his managerial career before the international break but brushed it aside, saying City are also the only club to win four league titles in a row.
“When you are here eight or nine years, you live all the scenarios and situations. You are able to lose four games in a row. At the same time, you are able to win four Premier Leagues in a row,” he said.
“The difference is most teams are able to lose four in a row in different competitions, but just one team won four Premier Leagues in a row. Both sides of the coin can happen.”
POLL REMINDER: Manchester City or Tottenham Hotspur to win?
Here’s your chance to have your say on who you think will win in our featured game:
Stat attack – Tottenham Hotspur
Tottenham have lost seven of their last 11 Premier League matches on the road, winning only two in that time.
That run has translated into one in five on their travels this season.
Strangely, Spurs have scored and conceded the same number of goals (23 and 13) as they did at the same stage last season. They have 10 fewer points, though.
Will Tottenham be Pep’s banana skin again?
Pep Guardiola’s record speaks for itself. But when it comes to Tottenham, the City manager seems to run into a banana skin.
Can Tottenham upset the odds against Cityzens yet again at Etihad Stadium? It would be five defeats on the bounce, if so, for Pep’s defending champions.
Stat attack – Manchester City
City have lost their last four games in a row – a first for their manager, Pep Guardiola.
That run started with a League Cup defeat by Tottenham, who were the team to inflict a fifth defeat on a similar losing streak in 2006.
City would go on to lose six on the bounce on that occasion. Spurs were also involved the last time City lost three consecutive home matches in the league, which they stand to do in this fixture, under Manuel Pellegrini in 2016 – only a few months before Guardiola’s arrival.
POLL: Manchester City vs Tottenham Hotspur – who will win?
Here’s your chance to have your say on who you think will win in our featured game:
Photos: A wet welcome in Manchester
Villa level up against Palace
Aston Villa have made it 2-2 late on against Crystal Palace. In the meantime, Arsenal are 3-0 up against Nottingham Forest.
Tottenham changes and formation
Although they continue to trend in the right direction, Romero and van de Wen will be sidelined once more as they weren’t named on the substitutes’ bench.
Davies and Dragusin will hope to put in a strong shift in their place. Tottenham have chosen to mirror City’s formation, with Solanke looked upon to provide a vital breakthrough.
Manchester City changes and formation
As expected, with the injuries to Dias and Ake, Akanji and Stones will partner at the centre of defence.
Kovacic’s omission due to injury means Lewis earns a place in the side. De Bruyne starts on the bench, but depending on how the match unfolds, should be expected to make an appearance.
City will go in with their usual 4-2-3-1, with Haaland the lone striker up front.
Weather update in Manchester
Temperatures have dropped in recent days across the country but not enough to trouble the English Premier League fixtures.
There has been snowfall in some areas but the weather has now taken a turn for warmer and wetter conditions.
Suffice to say, it’s very, very wet in Manchester. It will be interesting to see how that affects the play.
News of the Tottenham team sheet
News of the Man City team sheet
Tottenham Hotspur team news
Spurs have several players missing, including both their regular centre halves after Postecoglou confirmed that Cristian Romero would not be available along with Micky van de Ven.
Uruguayan Rodrigo Bentancur will also be absent, having been hit with a seven-match ban by the Football Association for making a derogatory remark about teammate Son Heung-min. Tottenham have appealed the length of the ban.
Manchester City team news
With Ballon d’Or winner Rodri sidelined for potentially the rest of the season, City were dealt another blow when Croatian midfielder Mateo Kovacic suffered an injury on international duty.
Ruben Dias remains sidelined while fellow defenders John Stones and Manuel Akanji have resumed training. Nathan Ake is also set to return to training to boost the beleaguered backline.
Premier League half-time scores
It’s certainly getting interesting at Villa Park:
Pep would commit to City even in the Conference
Guardiola says he would stay to the end of his contract with the Premier League champions even if they were relegated.
The Spaniard, who joined City in 2016, has won 18 trophies with the club, including six Premier League titles and their first Champions League and signed a two-year contract extension on Friday.
City are embroiled in a hearing over alleged breaches of the league’s financial fair play rules, however, which could potentially see them face points deductions, a fine and relegation if found guilty. Guardiola has always defended City, saying he trusts the owners, and the Spaniard said relegation would not cause him to leave the club.
“I said six months ago when all the clubs accused us to have done something wrong, what happened if we are relegated – I will be here,” Guardiola told reporters before Saturday’s home game against Tottenham Hotspur. “Next year, if we are in the conference, we will come up to the Premier League. I knew it then. I feel it now.”
Guardiola said he had agreed a new deal in “just two hours”, and when asked why he signed a two-year extension, he joked it was because he liked the Manchester weather. “It’s a good question. I don’t want next season – in September, October, November – ‘It’s the last year of Pep.’ I don’t want to be in that position,” he added.
“I would like to stay for two years, but I know if the results are not good, it will not be two years.”
Arsenal take the lead against Forest
The Gunners, who finished second to City last season, have the lead against Nottingham Forest at Emirates Stadium.
Crystal Palace, meantime, have scored first in their game with Aston Villa. Could there be an upset on the cards there?
Tottenham appeal length of Bentancur’s ban
Tottenham have appealed against the length of Rodrigo Bentancur’s seven-game suspension for his comments about teammate and South Korean star Son Heung-min.
Bentancur was banned by the Football Association on Monday, which ruled him out of six English Premier League fixtures and a League Cup quarterfinal against Manchester United.
The 27-year-old Uruguayan midfielder was charged with misconduct in September over a television interview he gave in his home country in June, when his reference to Son’s race made it an aggravated breach. Tottenham, however, are unhappy with the number of games Bentancur will miss and released a statement on Wednesday confirming their intention to appeal.
“While we accept the guilty finding against Rodrigo by the independent regulatory commission, we believe the subsequent sanction is severe,” the club statement read. “Rodrigo will remain suspended from domestic competitions while the appeal is heard, and the club will make no further comment during this time.”
Matchweek 12 in the Premier League in full
Chelsea kicked off the latest round matches with a 2-1 win against Leicester City, and the next big game of the day is our featured match at Etihad Stadium.
The 15:00 GMT kickoffs are already under way, and then on Sunday there are huge matches on their travels for league-leading Liverpool and City’s fierce rivals, Manchester United:
Pep signs two-year Man City extension
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola signed a two-year contract extension on Friday that will keep him at the Premier League champions until 2027.
The Spaniard’s decision means he will spend more than a decade at the club he joined in 2016, having led to a dazzling array of silverware, including six league titles and one Champions League crown. The news will be welcomed by City’s fans who might have feared the Guardiola era was drawing to a close with his current deal expiring at the end of this season.
“Manchester City means so much to me,” the 53-year-old, who previously had successful spells at Barcelona and Bayern Munich, said in a statement.
“This is my ninth season here; we have experienced so many amazing times together. I have a really special feeling for this football club. That is why I am so happy to be staying for another two more seasons.”
Chelsea beat Leicester in first Premier League game of the day
Chelsea have won the opening game of the day in the Premier League with a 2-1 win at Leicester City.
Nicolas Jackson and Enzo Fernandez put the Blues two up with the Foxes able to manage a consolation in injury time.
It’s Matchweek 12 in the English Premier League season and defending champions, City, in second are already five points behind leaders Liverpool.
Pep Guardiola’s Cityzens are on a four-match losing streak in all competitions but have been boosted by the two-year contract extension their manager signed on Friday.
Spurs are tenth and enduring a mixed season with five wins, and as many defeats, from their 11 games.
I’m Kevin Hand and I’ll be covering all of that, and plenty more news and analysis, comprehensively in our live build-up to the match at Etihad Stadium.
