Job Description

Peace educator for inclusive conflict transformation (m/f/d) – Ngaoundéré, Cameroon

AGIAMONDO is the personnel service of the German Catholics for Development Cooperation. In the Civil Peace Service (CPS) we offer development workers a meaningful role working with local development agents. The CPS is a personnel programme for peace-building and the prevention of violence in crisis and conflict regions. It sets out to promote a world in which conflicts are settled without violence. Working with church-related and civil-social partner organisations in Cameroon, AGIAMONDO aims to make a contribution towards civil conflict management and the sustainable and equitable development of the country through peace-building measures.

The Comité Diocésain de Développement et des Activités Sociales (CODAS/Caritas) de Ngaoundéré is responsible for pastoral-social work in the diocese Ngaoundéré. CODAS/Caritas is divided into 5 departments (Education, Health, Rural Development, Justitia et Pax and Caritas) and works across the diocese to improve people’s access to education, health, justice, adequate living conditions, resources and basic infrastructure.

The diocese of Ngaoundéré geographically covers the province of Adamaoua. The population is very diverse and belongs to various religions. The region has been marked by deep-rooted conflicts in the past and present. They are difficult to control because solution strategies are often linked to identitarian and political interests and are therefore not sustainable. CODAS/Caritas works for the integration of displaced persons in the host society and balanced access to local resources (land, economy, and basic services such as health and education), taking into account different diversity categories in the Adamaoua region.

The site is located in north-eastern Cameroon in a high rainfall zone and is considered safe. In your free time, you can make excursions to the diverse natural attractions as well as historical and cultural places such as the Sultan’s Palace of Ngaoundéré and other palaces. Although the city is in a rural setting, basic medical services are available. It is easily accessible by road, the national rail network or by air.

Specifically, you will carry out the following tasks:

– Developing training measures for the staff of the partner organisation on the methods of inclusive conflict management, especially between displaced persons and the local population.

– Creating and implementing educational methods to raise awareness of, promote and value cultural diversity.

– Creating spaces for dialogue to overcome social tensions.

– Collaborating with decision makers and traditional authorities in social advocacy on resource conflicts, among other issues.

– Properly disbursing and managing funds locally in accordance with donor guidelines and AGIAMONDO requirements. In doing so, you will work in partnership with CDJP.

Your profile:

– You have a university degree e. g. in social sciences, education, psychology or social work as well as several years of practical experience working with refugees.

– You have experience in inclusive (intercultural and interfaith) work and in transforming conflicts.

– You have practical knowledge of adult education and organisational development.

– You speak fluent French and English and have a driver’s license.

– You are an EU or Swiss citizen, a member of a Christian church and identify with the goals and concerns of church development and peace work.

What AGIAMONDO offers:

– Subsistence payments

– Social benefits

– Private insurance

– Personnel development

– Health care

– Cost coverage
