Background
The COVID-19 pandemic, declared by the World Health Organization (WHO) as an international public health emergency (IPU) on 30 January 2020, and qualified as a pandemic since mid-March 2020, has generated a serious health crisis at the global level, with unprecedented repercussions on privacy (restrictions on freedom of movement), social organization (radical containment and social distancing measures), and the productive and industrial capacity of all countries around the world, including Algeria.
Since March 19, 2020, and in the face of the rapid and exponential progression of the disease, the public authorities have adopted many measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus. In parallel with these measures, public awareness campaigns have been carried out on the media and by civil society organizations.
It is in this context of health crisis and as part of its global initiative “Team Europe” to support partner countries in their fight against the spread of Covid-19 and good neighbourly relations with Algeria, that the European Union has made available funding of 43 million euros to support the Algerian public health system in order to face this pandemic and limit its consequences. This funding will be implemented through a triangular partnership bringing together the Ministry of Health (MS), the Delegation of the European Union to Algeria and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). This partnership gave birth to the project entitled “European solidarity response to the Covid-19 crisis in Algeria”.
