Description

The International Water Management Institute (IWMI), a CGIAR Research Center, is seeking applications from enthusiastic students to tackle Africa’s food, water and climate change challenges through research and development under the Institute’s internship program.

Scope of internship

IWMI, a CGIAR Research Center, is involved in several CGIAR Research Initiatives and leads the initiative Ukama Ustawi: Diversification for Resilient Agrifood Systems in East and Southern Africa. The aim of this initiative is to support climate-resilient agriculture and livelihoods in 12 countries in East and Southern Africa, by helping millions of smallholders intensify, diversify and de-risk maize-mixed farming through improved extension services, enterprise development and private investment.

The intern will work closely with the Ukama Ustawi initiative’s Work Package 3 (Business Acceleration) team to support activities surrounding the launch of a call for applications for the first cohort of the accelerator program. The initiative will work closely with country partners in Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda and Zambia to identify suitable applicants for the program as well as potential investors.

During this internship, the intern will assist in the following areas:

Provide administrative support to the launch of the accelerator program spanning across four African countries.

Identify and reach out to potential applicants for the program and create a list of applicants.

Identify potential investors and create a database of investors.

Review existing literature on environmental, social and governance (ESG) investments in climate-smart agriculture and prepare a list of relevant literature.

Develop an ESG framework that allows for the quantification of sustainability outputs for agri-investors.

Master’s or PhD students who have recently graduated in business administration, management or finance.

Proven interest in corporate sustainability, ESG criteria, and inclusive business or sustainable finance.

Previous internship experience in consulting, venture capital or private equity, and startups.

Experience in using a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods and participatory approaches to design and conduct field research within a systems thinking context.

Ability to communicate research findings in English.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Master’s or PhD students who have recently graduated in business administration, management or finance.

Proven interest in corporate sustainability, ESG criteria, and inclusive business or sustainable finance.

Previous internship experience in consulting, venture capital or private equity, and startups.

Experience in using a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods and participatory approaches to design and conduct field research within a systems thinking context.

Ability to communicate research findings in English.

IWMI will provide a monthly stipend to the selected candidate during the internship period.

The duration of the internship is 03 months. This is a nationally recruited internship and only citizens of South Africa are eligible to apply.
