Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
- Hold a Master’s degree in a literary/cultural discipline with a minimum GPA of 2.0 (German system) or, in rare cases, a Bachelor’s degree with GPA ≥ 1.5
- Demonstrate language proficiency: one of German or English at C1, the other at least B1 level
- Possess additional foreign language skills as outlined in the PhD study regulations
- Not have resided in Germany for more than 15 months prior to nomination
- Have completed their last academic degree within the past 6 years
- Not hold a PhD
- Be willing to reside in Germany for the duration of the program (research stays abroad are allowed for up to 25% of the total duration)
Application Procedure
Step 1: Application to GSPoL (Deadline: 31 May 2025)
- Submit the following as a single PDF by email (excluding letters of reference):
- Motivation letter
- CV (without photo)
- Degree certificates and transcripts (plus certified translation if not in German/English)
- Language proficiency certificates
- 10-page PhD research proposal with abstract
- Timeline for research, including any planned stays abroad
- Two or three letters of reference using the DAAD template (submitted separately by your professors)

Step 2: Interview at GSPoL
Shortlisted candidates will be invited for an interview (online or in person).
Step 3: Nomination to DAAD
Final selection is made by DAAD after GSPoL’s nomination. The candidate must also complete an online DAAD application with documentation via the DAAD portal.
