Mission and objectives

Since its inception in 1972, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has been the global authority that sets the environmental agenda, promotes the coherent implementation of the environmental dimension of sustainable development within the United Nations system and serves as an authoritative advocate for the global environment.

UNEP’s mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations.

Headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, UNEP works through its divisions as well as regional, liaison and out-posted offices and a growing network of collaborating centres of excellence.

 

Context

UN Environment is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. This assignment is in the UN Environment’s Corporate Services Division, at the Nairobi duty station. The Enterprise Solutions Unit in the of Corporate Services Division is mandated to enable efficient programme delivery through the use of ICT standards, solution and overall business process automation supporting the organization’s programme of work. It undertakes a wide range of services, activities and projects. It works closely with clients throughout the project life cycle to tailor the services to their needs ensuring that the solution meets the required objectives from a specification, resource and time perspective.

Corporate Services Division safeguards UNEP’s corporate interests by providing it with tools and plans for efficient and effective management and by managing its exposure to risk. It does so in line with the core values of the United Nations as well as all other relevant rules, regulations and accountability requirements.

 

Task description

Under the direct supervision of a Programme Management Officer in Enterprise Solutions Section/UNEP’s Corporate Services Division, the UN Volunteer will take the following tasks:

  1. UNEP Intranet technical support
  • Assist with systems functionalities enhancements following the results of UNEP-wide survey on weCollaborate, including improving search functionality and others.
  • In coordination with DevOps team assist with implementation of revamped tool for management of the Intranet content creators network.
  • Provide support to Greening of the Blue Course on weCollaborate.
  • Troubleshoot technical issues of pages/spaces/calendars and other features in weCollaborate on demand.
  • Assist with user-guides and technical documentation development for learning purposes.
  1. Technical assistance with business process optimization tools like weWork and weApprove (Digital Workspace)
  • Serve as a back-up support for technical maintenance, enhancements and client assistance on the key process optimization tools of UNEP.
  • Assist with production of user-guides, video tutorials, FAQs and other learning materials on the associated tools.
  • Dashboards configuration
  • Analyse, design and develop simple corporate dashboards as per business requirements, including for UNEPs Intranet, weShare platform, and others.

 

Perform other tasks as required.

  • Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to: Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Age: 18 – 80

Required experience: 1 month

Nationality: Candidate must be a national or legal resident of the country of assignment.

  • Bachelor degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Information and/or Communication Technology or a related field

Skills and experience

  • years of experience:
  • Experience with ICT technical support and software design/development.
  • Knowledge of Confluence, JIRA, PowerPlatform, JavaScript and/or PHP is desirable.
  • Experience with data visualization tools like PowerBI is an asset.
  • Excellent oral and written skills; excellent drafting, formulation, reporting skills;
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;
  • Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
  • Self-motivated, ability to work with minimum supervision; ability to work with tight deadlines;
  • Have affinity with or interest in digital environmental sustainability, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN system.

The Republic of Kenya is an equatorial nation on the coast of East Africa, neighboring Somalia, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and the Indian Ocean. Kenya has two levels of Government; National Government and 47 sub-national Governments called Counties. Counties are further divided into sub-counties. Kenya is a multi-party state with Executive, Legislative, and Judicial branch-es. Kenya’s population of more than 40 million is growing at an annual rate of 2.2%. The country’s GNP per capita estimated at purchasing power parity (PPP) is $975, and the GNP is growing at an average rate of 0.1% annually. Nairobi is a modern metropolitan city where most basic goods and services, health facilities, public transport, telecommunication and banking services, and educational facilities are readily available. The city is widely connected through its main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and the smaller Wilson Airport. Air transport is also available to many up-country destinations. The city is home to some 3,000 UN personnel mainly attributed to the fact that it serves as the headquarters for both the UN-HABITAT and UNEP.

The socio-economic and cultural background of the immediate society the UNV would be living and working in is diverse and prevailing security conditions at the place of assignment is modest. The topographic and climatic features of the assignment location is highland cool and warm tropical climate.
